Punalu’u Black sand Beach is located in the east side of the southern part of the Big Island around 60 miles from Hilo airport. It offers an incredible contrast of the gorgeous white Hapuna beach & vibrant golden beaches like Kaunaoa Bay. Black sand gets formed when a lava flow meets the ocean and the lava rock is pulverized into small bits eventually forming a sand form(Reference: http://www.best-big-island-hawaii.com/black-sand-beach.html). Adding to the incredible view, it is very likely to find Hawaiian Green Sea turtles basking on the beach. We spent an unforgettable quiet afternoon (after the Helicopter tour over the volcanoes)enjoying the very unique sight of jet black colored sand beach with coconut palms and green Sea turtles..
P.S: Don’t miss the fresh coconut water getting sold by the locals.
